WORKOUT FOR THE THUNDERSTORM STAKES
Indian Delight and Sarah Star
Alright handsome boy, let's do this. Sarah said as she mounted up. The bay three year old thoroughbred fidgeted, eager to go for a good run. Indian Delight was last on her workout schedule today, and it showed in his behaviour. She made a chatty noise with her tongue, asking him to pick up the pace and trot. The colt instead broke into canter, and bucked a little. Sarah sighed. She knew this would happen - Indie had been watching all the other horses in the barn leave and return from their workouts all morning. Now it was nearly 8am and the track was pretty much deserted.
Sarah leaned back in the saddle, tightening the reins and putting more pressure on the colts mouth. He bucked a final time, then dropped back to trot. Sarah rose quickly in time with his beats, her mind wandering the race the colt would be running in this weekend. The Thunderstorm Stakes, nine furlongs on turf with a competitive field of five. In gate one was Destined for Glory, a three year old filly with a record of 13-2-4-2. Gate two held Worldbreaker, a three year old colt out of Wild Flower and by Grand Silence, with a record of 14-3-6-2. In gate three was 4yo Whip Up the Dancing, bred by SOPS and STBS and recently sold to East Coast Stables. He had a record of 24-3-8-6. In gate six was three year old colt Seattle Sun, who had a record of 6-1-2-2 and had been racing competitively in sprint races recently.
Pressing the colt on into canter, after about fifteen minutes of trotting, I wondered about Indian Delight himself in the field. He was in gate five, had a record of 16-3-6-4.
